Kabuki vs. Bunraku

Even though Kabuki originated from Bunraku (Japanese puppet shows) they are very different. The scripts and the plays of Bunraku were much more honored and thought out than the Kabuki plays. Until Kabuki became Japanese's most famous theatre in the Edo period, Bunraku was the more popular of the two. The scripts for Bunraku were exciting and a drama within itself, rather than Kabuki which would be “sentimental repertory plays, empty braggadocio, thrillers, and ghost stories” without actors. Before these puppet shows, they would actually bow down to the script. At that point, Kabuki author’s weren’t seen as popular. But Kabuki and Bunraku were both based off of the same play type, Jidaimono.
